The Mighty Mustang Varsity football team traveled to Plainview Friday to play the Plainview High School Bulldogs. There were Bulldog fans on both sides of the field, a literal sea of red and black with shirts reading “No Bark and All Bite”. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs there wasn’t an abundance of either on Friday as they were defeated by the Mustangs 20-7.

The Bulldogs recieved the kick from number fourteen Jake Higgs and the return man was taken down by number 20 Stanton Cody. After a couple of futile attempts to move the ball, the Bulldogs threw an incomplete pass on third down. Number fifteen Ozzie Bueno recieved their punt on fourth down.

The Mustang’s Kyler Gilbreath completed a pass to number seven Korbin Gilbreath to make it first and ten and a handoff to number 33 gave the Mustangs first and goal. On the next play a touchdown was scored by number nine Korbin Gilbreath. Jake Higgs kicked the exta point and the score was 7-0 in the seventh minute.

In the last few seconds of the quarter however, the Bulldogs intercepted a Mustang pass and ran the ball down the sidelines the length of the field to score their only touchdown. The kick was good and the score was tied going into the second quarter.

The second quarter started with the Mustangs on offense. After working down the field to a first down with one yard to go they scored another touchdown in the sixth minute. Again Higgs booted the extra point and the Mustangs were ahead 14-7.

The Bulldogs received the ball on the kickoff but their retrun man fumbled the kick and it was recovered by the Mustang defense. A penalty flag had been thrown against the Bulldogs during the course of the play but the Mustangs declined it in favor of keeping the ball.

The offense carried the ball over the next few plays into a position to kick a field goal. They did just that and Jake Higgs earned another three points to make it 17-7.

When the ball was theirs again the Bulldogs threw another incomplete pass. After making almost no progress they kicked the ball and it was recieved by number fifteen Ozzie Bueno. Before the half the Mustangs kicked one more field goal and the score was 20-7.

After halftime Hunter Hicks came in as quarterback for Kyler Gilbreath. The Bulldog kickoff resulted in a touchback. The Mustangs ran a reverse with a fake handoff that earned a second down with one yard to go. The next pass thrown to number seven Korbin Gilbreath was incomplete, however the next pass found number thirty three Marc Zarate and the Mustangs had a first down with ten yards to go on the fifty yard line.

At eleven minutes and eleven seconds exactly Coach Cordell called a time out. After that, the Mustangs were still on the fifty yard line with a second down. Bueno carried the ball three yards to the forty seven. On third down with seven yards to go Hunter was sacked and pushed back to the thirty seven yard line.

The Bulldogs had to deal with the Mustang defense next.

Plainview’s first pass was incomplete. On third down with eight yards to go, the Bulldogs’ number 2 ran the ball and was taken down by Ozzie Bueno. In their next move, they handed the ball off and gained five yards before being tackled. Now on third down at the forty eight yard line, the Bulldog reciever was cornered by number twenty one Jayton Fee and their pass was incomplete. Number four for the Bulddogs punted ball out of bounds and the Mustangs were again on offense.

The rest of the quarter saw Mustangs move the ball well, although it appeared that the Bulldogs might be creeping up. The Mustang defense and offense held them very well, though. They entered the fourth quarter on defense, pushing back the Bulldogs with a great stop made by number thirty two, Larry Polanco. On third down at the seven yard line a flag was thrown against the defense for pass interference.

The offense suffered a sack on third down but on the next play Hunter Hicks threw a great pass to Bueno. With fourth down and one yard to go on the twenty five yard line the Mustangs punted the ball to the Bulldogs. The Mustang defense held them well as the Bulldogs threw another incomplete pass and commited a penalty on first down.

Coach Cordell decided to let the game run its course from then on instead of running up the score on the Bulldogs. He told the Andrews County Reporter’s Rudy Diaz that the Mustang football program is a classy one and that as long as they are on the winning side of the game they will never run up the score on anyone.

Overall the game was a very impressive showing for your Mighty Mustangs. The Bulldogs gained very few yards throughout the entire game and even had negative rushing yards because of all the sacks, tackles, and incomplete passes they suffered. Quarterbacks Kyler Gilbreath and Hunter Hicks both connected well with their recievers, especially Korbin Gilbreath and Ozzie Bueno. Quick thinking to recover fumbles, a nearly impenetrable defense, smart offense, and classy style of play combined to give the Mustangs one of thier best wins we’ve seen.

Here’s the deal. I read all the Twilight books. Cover to cover. I read them in an attempt to understand something. I wanted to know what made girls swoon, guys cringe, and everyone open up their wallets. Simply put, I needed to see what all the fuss was about. And I found it!! I think I understand where the mania comes from. However, this does not mean I agree. In fact, by understanding Twilight I may have even begun to like it less than when I started.

There I am at Chili’s clutching a brand new copy of New Moon. I have been taking this book everywhere with me for the past few days reading and reading. Innocent passers by would look at me and see a Twi-hard, another soldier in Stephenie Meyer’s army of “Team Edwards” and “Team Jacobs.” But I was on a mission. I would not rest until I found what it was in that book, the one before, and the two after that could cause a 21st century obsession.

What I found was a naïve girl, an impossibly suave one hundred year old male, an army of evil blood suckers and a Native American quite literally suffering from the worst case of “puppy love” I have ever seen. The book appealed to me. But it appealed to me on several very basic levels.

Bella Swan is not a complicated woman. She is the epitome of needy, weak, and illogical. Edward appeals to her in the first Twilight book because he is impolite, good looking, drives a Volvo, and has an obvious undercurrent of bad boy intrigue. He is tall, maybe not so dark, and handsome. Swoon, right? No. Because he also happens to be a hungry blood sucker.

Bella has strange needs. The need to be watched at all hours of the night for “protection.” The need to prove to herself that she can be in love with a self proclaimed masochist. Are nightly stare sessions needed for a guy to get a girl’s attention in this post Twilight world? The answer is once again a resounding no. There are good things about Edward (his old world charm, his taste in music), but he also presents impossibly high standards for the mortal man.

Bella also captures the fantasies of women in that she is loved unconditionally by not just one incredibly strong immortal man, but two. Yes two. This average girl from a small town has the local vampire and the local werewolf on a string. For reasons no one can explain, at least until Breaking Dawn, the Native American/Werewolf Jacob is hopelessly infatuated with Bella. Even though it is explained later on to be an extremely strange and borderline illegal problem he has we as the reader still feel that two hot guys is more than enough for one Plain Jane. Share a little Bella. Sheesh.

While it’s perfectly fine and encouraged to hold out for the best it is unfair to base a man’s worthiness off a fictional superhuman that a middle aged woman created. However, everything I have mentioned is what makes us love Edward and Bella. She is beautiful and has a knack for danger. He is also beautiful as well as a great protector. It’s a romantic medieval fairy tale. I admit it, I was sucked in.
