Art Students to compete in VASE

Written by Jessica Estrada, Staff Writer

If painting, drawing, or sculpting catches your eye, the Visual Arts Scholastic Event is just calling your name, so come and talk to Mrs. Wheeler about joining us for VASE.
The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) has sponsored VASE since 1994. Art students from Andrews High School have been attending the event for over 12 years and don’t plan to stop any time soon. Last year AHS had over 300 pieces of art compete, and took 4 people to state. Three students placed and won medals, they were Ksusha Emeliyanova, Nathan Martin, and Erica Jimenez. Also, eight regional medals and four area medals were awarded to other students from Andrews.
If you are an art student and would like to sign up for VASE go talk to Mrs. Wheeler and let her know you are interested. VASE isn’t just for art students though, even if you are not in her class you are eligible to go. You must be able to work a few hours a week with her so she can see your progress and help with anything. Projects done at home will not be able to enter. Mrs. Wheeler has to see you work on it.
VASE will take place on February 27th at Permian High School in Odessa. Parents and friends are also welcome to come. Buses will leave from the one way at 6:30 a.m. and will return at around 10 or 11 that night. There will be workshops and other activities going on during judging and shows along with snack bars. People from all over Texas come to join the fun, and we would be happy to have you there as well.
